A dog that can get into a pool but not out of it is the most common backyard drowning risk there is. Dogs tire quickly, pool walls give them nothing to grip, and a panicked dog circling the edge is a genuine emergency — not a training problem.

Why pools are harder for dogs than lakes
- Vertical walls. A lake has a shore. A pool has a wall with nothing to climb.
- Slick coping. Wet tile and concrete give no purchase to paws.
- Cold shock and fatigue. A dog that has been swimming for ten minutes has far less left than the owner assumes.
- Steps are often on the wrong side. A dog that entered at the far end may never find them.

Choose on weight and round up if your dog sits near a boundary. A ramp that flexes underfoot teaches a dog not to trust it, and that lesson is hard to undo.
Inflatable versus rigid
Rigid ramps are fixed at one height. Pool water level moves with rain, evaporation and backwashing, so a fixed ramp is correct on one day and wrong on another. A floating ramp tracks the level. It is also soft against a vinyl liner, which matters if you have one.

Getting your dog to use it
Expect three or four guided sessions. Introduce the ramp in calm shallow water, let the dog walk it with no pressure, and reward the exit rather than the entry. Never place a dog in deep water and expect it to find the ramp unaided.
