The mistake almost everyone makes is introducing the ramp while the dog is already swimming. A tired dog in open water meeting an unfamiliar floating object for the first time will usually swim straight past it and back to the person shouting encouragement.
Do it on the grass first. It takes about ten minutes.
Step one: dry land, no water anywhere
Inflate the ramp and lay it flat on the lawn. Let the dog sniff it, stand on it, walk across it. Treats on the surface. You want the ramp to become boring before it ever becomes useful.
Step two: add a slope
Prop one end on a step or a low box so the dog walks up a gentle incline. The mesh entry and the four integrated steps give a dog something to push against, but they still need to learn that the surface holds under their weight.
Step three: the shallow end
Move to a pool step, a shoreline, or a dock in shallow water. Anchor it properly — the four D-rings and the two supplied 8 ft ropes exist for this. A ramp that shifts under a dog's first attempt can set you back several sessions.
Let the dog walk down it into the water rather than up it out of the water. Going down is less demanding and builds the association in the safer direction.
Step four: the real thing
Now have them swim a short distance and come back to the ramp. Stand at the top with the treat they actually care about. Most dogs get it on the first or second attempt because they have already learned the surface is trustworthy.
Get the angle right
The most common reason a dog refuses a ramp is that it is too steep. Shallower is better, even if it means the ramp extends further into the water. A dog will climb a gentle slope it can see the top of.
Size to the dog you have
Our ramps come rated to roughly 99 lb and 143 lb. If you are between sizes, go up. A ramp that flexes and wobbles under a scrambling dog teaches exactly the wrong lesson, and undoing that takes far longer than the ten minutes you saved.
